New world order needs new frameworks
The world is going through one of the worst and best times of human history with wars being fought by many countries and technological advancement reaching at its zenith. While the advanced artificial intelligence technology and robotics in China underline how nations embracing technology can advance and improve the people's lives, raging war in Middle East and conflicts in Europe present bleak hopes of peace and security in the world.
Interestingly, this has triggered discussions about the changing world order worldwide, but where is the order? Chaos is the new world order except in Asia where peace comparatively prevails. It also makes the region vulnerable and a playground for war propaganda forces to sow the seeds of discord and thwart peaceful coexistence of communities which is beyond comprehension for western world. Asia is rich with its centuries-old cultural heritage and heterogeneous society of people belonging to various ethnic groups, religions, caste, traditions and beliefs who are able to live in harmony despite their differences.
But the rising geopolitical conflicts orchestrated or supported by nations like US vying for supremacy have started affecting social cohesion in many parts of the world, especially in the Middle East. The ongoing onslaught Israel has unleashed upon the Palestinian resistance group Hamas spilled over into neighbouring Arab nations like Iran, Lebanon, Yemen and Syria. Powerful nations in the region like Saudi Arabia, United Arab Emirates and Qatar has showed their support to mediation talks initiated by US, UK, France and other nations. Ironically, the nations that are taking initiatives for peace are often found to be taking double standards by supplying Israel with arms and aids to prolong the oppression of Palestinian people.
Days before swearing-in as the 45th president of United States of America, Donald Trump has promised to end the war. However, soon after his first meeting with Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu as the new US president, everything went back to what has been feared by many putting an the end to the last hope the world, especially the Arab nations, has had for a lasting solution.
The US president’s unwavering support for Netanyahu and his genocidal policy has always been a stumbling block in the more than five decade-long peace process to realize the two-state solution backed by the international community, besides the UN and European Union. Though the raging war in Gaza has put the spotlight back on establishing two states of Palestine and Israel living side by side, the present situation calls for stopping Israel from massacring innocent people who are caught in the crossfire of a warmongering nation and a resistance group who are acting on behalf of a helpless community.
The popular western media blaming Hamas for the recent episodes of bloodshed is unreasonable and they badly need to look back to the pages of history to know how it all began. As per the latest reports, the number of Palestinians killed since October 2023 has crossed 49,000 with majority of them are women and children. It is still unclear what triggered Hamas to start an outright war with Israel on October 7 by abducting people who were attending a music festival and attacking neighborhoods in southern Israel. It killed nearly 1,200 people and taking 251 as hostages. Several doubts like, was it just a security breach, or Hamas had made use of an opportunity to intrude into Israel? Why Netanyahu is not heeding to people of Israel to accept the ceasefire deal for a safe rescue of remaining hostages? Is power more important the lives of ordinary Israelis for him?
Fortunately, Qatar, Egypt, United Arab Emirates and Saudi Arabia are still in the forefront of the peace negotiations. The Arab nations left their initial lethargic handling of the situation and have risen up to the occasion, but they still lack the vigor to hold emergency discussions. The hopes alive of putting end to the killings of innocent lives in Gaza can be achieved by taking a proactive step. But that needs a complete shake-up of the systems that work around the UN, which was formed in 1945 after the World War 2. After 75 years, UN looks wearied and its voice is completely ignored by global powers which call for new frameworks to make the world move in a just, rightful direction.
Nations deploring the inhumane conditions and wanted to defend the people of Palestine must come forward to forge new ties and put pressure on US and its weird policy of breaking up nations into pieces by hook or crook. If, an iota of sincerity remains with the empathetic nations, they should step forward to stop yet another genocide that is happening before our eyes. The rest can wait.
